Memberships in golf clubs in many countries is not only for golf enthusiasts. It is for those who can afford it, and who need the prestige that goes along with the membership. The extremely high-profile image is necessary to get important business contracts signed for the companies they represent. In some golf clubs, there is a limit to the number of members that the clubs can have at any given time. The purpose of setting the limit is to keep the price of the membership (and the prestige that goes with it) at a high level. Thus, in cases where the limit has been reached, getting admitted to the club means looking for a current member who is willing to sell his membership, which only comes with a high price---several tens of thousands of US dollars in some cases.
